Why Lab Testing Matters
If you could only ask one question before buying a CBD product, it should be this: can I see the lab results?
The answer to that question tells you more about a brand than their marketing, their packaging, or their price tag. Here is why.
The Problem with Self-Regulation
The CBD industry is not regulated the way pharmaceuticals or even traditional supplements are. The FDA has not established comprehensive quality standards for CBD products. That means the responsibility for quality falls on the brands themselves.
Some brands take that responsibility seriously. Others do not.
Independent studies have found that many CBD products on the market do not contain the amount of CBD listed on the label. Some contain more THC than advertised. Some contain pesticides, heavy metals, or other contaminants.
You cannot tell the difference by looking at the bottle. The only way to know what is inside is to look at the lab report.
What Independent Lab Testing Covers
When a CBD product is tested by a third-party laboratory, the lab examines several categories:
Cannabinoid potency. How much CBD is actually in the product? Does it match the label? Is there THC? How much? This confirms you are getting what you paid for.
Pesticides. Hemp is a bioaccumulator. If the hemp was grown with pesticides, those chemicals can end up in the final product. Lab testing screens for dozens of common pesticides.
Heavy metals. Lead, arsenic, mercury, and cadmium can all be present in hemp-derived products if the soil was contaminated. Lab testing confirms the product is within safe limits.
Residual solvents. The extraction process may use solvents that need to be fully removed. Lab testing confirms no harmful solvents remain in the finished product.
Microbial contaminants. Bacteria, mold, and yeast can grow during processing or storage. Lab testing screens for common microbial contaminants.
Why "Third-Party" Matters
The key word is "independent." A brand testing its own products in its own facility is not verification. It is a self-assessment.
Third-party testing means the product is sent to a laboratory that has no financial relationship with the brand. The lab has no incentive to produce favorable results. They test the product and report what they find.
This independence is what makes a Certificate of Analysis (COA) trustworthy. It is the difference between a company saying "trust us" and a company saying "here is the proof."
How Cross Country Wellness Does Lab Testing
Our process is straightforward:
- We produce a batch of product.
- We send samples from that batch to an independent laboratory.
- The lab tests for cannabinoid potency, THC content, pesticides, heavy metals, residual solvents, and microbial contaminants.
- The lab produces a Certificate of Analysis documenting the results.
- We publish the COA on our website so you can read it before you buy.
Every product. Every batch. Every time.
Our products are zero THC -- confirmed by the lab, not just printed on the label. You can verify this yourself by reading the COA on any of our product pages.
How to Evaluate a Brand's Lab Testing
Here is a quick checklist:
Is the COA published? If you cannot find it easily, that is a problem.
Is it from an independent lab? The lab name should be clearly stated on the COA. You should be able to look up the lab and verify its accreditation.
Does it cover more than just potency? A COA that only tests CBD content but skips contaminant testing is incomplete.
Is it batch-specific? The COA should have a batch number that matches your product. A single COA used for all products is not adequate.
Is it recent? Lab testing should happen regularly, not once when the company started.
The Bottom Line
Lab testing is not a marketing feature. It is the foundation of trust in an industry with minimal oversight. When a brand publishes their COAs, they are showing you they have nothing to hide.
Cross Country Wellness was built on this principle. Our founder started this company because he believed people deserve to know exactly what they are putting in their bodies. Lab testing is how we prove that commitment with every product we sell.
